What We Do

Sankofa facilitates the revitalization of Ghanaian communities through small-scale development projects, especially through strengthening educational institutions, increasing access to water, and adequate healthcare facilities. In partnership with civil society stakeholders, Sankofa focuses on local capacity-building to best serve the relevant issues present in individual communities. To honor its name, Sankofa, a local Ghanaian word meaning “return to your roots,” integrates West African cultural education initiatives in America, focusing on inner-city youth to discover and celebrate their own cultures and heritages. Sankofa combines both their Ghanaian and American programs to provide a space for idea exchange and facilitating long-term, international connections.
